Office Plants and Flowers Make the Day Easier, Seriously

The purely aesthetic appeal of flowers and plants in office settings, homes, and public buildings is well known and, indeed, is often assumed to be their main 'benefit'-they just make things look a lot nicer. office-plant1 However, there has been ongoing research which more than suggests that the mere presence of flowers and plants has a number of healthy effects on people.  These findings are neither new nor specific to smaller flora; for example, you can find the following inspiring piece of information on Arborday.org: "In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension."-Dr. Roger S. Ulrich Texas A&M University Humanity's connection with the world outside our metropolises remains as strong as ever; and strategically placed flowers and plants throughout the workplace (or anywhere you would like them) can and do have similar effects to those caused by the presence of trees.   Furthermore, the addition of flora just about anywhere is often well received by people, and this makes their positive influence that much easier to implement.  It is highly doubtful that anyone would object to your acquiring flowers to brighten the office up a little bit, but you can further excite them with the subsequent information

An Office Plant or Flower

One of the main advantages that these studies have going for them is this:  many people already have an intuitive understanding of flowers' favorable effects as well as their own beliefs about why and how this is so, which gives scientists numerous hypotheses to test for accuracy.  Fortunately, this is one of those cases where people's intuitions are well supported by the objective standards of science. And now for the pure good news that will tweak your interest in flowers substantially.  In one study, various measurements were taken of subjects' responses to a number of visual environments.  The environments consisted of variations of a single office background.  These variations included combinations of windows, indoor plants, city views, nature views, and no windows.  The participants found themselves the least tense and anxious in the environments that included the indoor plants and windows with nature views; conversely, they were much more tense and anxious in environments that lacked both the plants and the window view.  The presence of plants consistently contributed to the decrease of anxiety and tension, as did the window nature view.

Flowers and Plant Improved Customers Views too

Because of these sorts of discoveries, many researchers are seeing how far they can take the benefits of flowers and plants, even going as far as improving the restaurant industry by enhancing the customers' moods with the strategic placement of flora.  In varying degrees we have all seen this initiative, but now we know why it is so important.  Less stress, as doctors and other experts have been telling us for years, leads to very healthy outcomes, and it is good to know that something as simple as a flower can assist in their acquisition. Over all, then, we see that the benefits of having flowers and plants in a work environment are:
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Enhanced moods
  • Improved visuals and office aesthesis
Your next order of flowers for yourself, your coworkers, or your business means a lot more now, doesn't it? So how do you get the maximum benefits of live plants in an office environment without having to worry about watering them and dealing with dead leaves on the conference room floor?
