. Add Christmas flowers, evergreen foliage, winter branches, and sparkling lights. These accents are sure to get you (and all passersby) in the holiday spirit!
Christmas Flowers: Tips for your NYC Container Garden
View your container garden as a large scale arrangement – use branches and foliage to define the shape and play as the perfect outdoor holiday decorations.
- White Pine, Noble Fire, Juniper, Cedar, & Magnolia offer evergreen color and lush fullness to planters
- Birch branches and poles add height as well as brightness
- Red Dogwood also adds great height and can be twisted and looped to create exciting shapes
- Use unbreakable ornaments to add safe sparkle
- Add other natural elements like pinecones, birch bark and moss for added interest and texture
- If you have access to an electrical outlet, add lights for festive drama – but limit yourself to one color and one shape to keep the design clean and simple

Outdoor Holiday Decorations: Cleanup Tips for NYC’s End of Season

Smart & Sophisticated Decor without Causing a Clark Griswold Christmas Blackout
One of my favorite holiday traditions is to watch Christmas movies throughout the entire month of December. We usually begin with “Love Actually” and work up to “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The one that is coming to mind today is, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” and the efforts of Clark Griswold uses to get into the holiday mood by stringing thousands
of lights on his house and causing a blackout.
We love Clark’s holiday spirit, but we hope that our ideas for outdoor holiday decorations will help you decorate your NYC home a little smarter, with a sophisticated flare.
