NYC’s Big Apple Florist understands that the key to anyone’s heart is a beautiful flower arrangement or chocolate delivery this Valentine’s day. Whether it is heart shaped, packaged in a box, or a liquid to warm you up on a cold night, NYC loves Valentine’s Day chocolate and flowers
. Whatever the case, the
melty, sugary, classic taste of chocolate makes New Yorkers sigh with relief, close their eyes and say, “Ahhh.”
The History of Chocolate
Chocolate comes from the Aztec word “xocolatl” meaning “bitter water” because originally, people would drink chocolate. The cocoa beans were ground into a fine powder and then added to cold water. I must say, being a hot chocolate fanatic, the thought of drinking cold chocolate doesn’t quite appeal to me.
Apparently, the Mayans in the 6th
century really loved drinking chocolate because, to their culture, drinking chocolate symbolized life and fertility. Aztec warriors drank chocolate to boost aggression and virility by adding chili peppers and corn meal for extra flavor. Chocolate became a constituent of their civilization:
- Utilized in ceremonies
- Bestowed as gifts
- Coalesced into their mythologies
Mayans even used the cocoa beans as currency!
From the start, chocolate was actually a beverage. British Company, J.S. Fry and Sons, eventually decided to make chocolate a solid by adding more cocoa butter to the cocoa powder and sugar recipe. Then in 1875, to add some more zest in our chocolate, Daniel Peter and Henri Nestle added condensed milk to solid chocolate--creating none other than our favorite milk chocolate! Richard Cadbury, too, wanted to get in on the action and started making heart shaped boxes of chocolates. We can thank Mr. Cadbury for the big heart-shaped chocolate delivery that we expect from our NYC honeys every Valentine’s Day!
